Gov’t aid to Kanlaon-troubled families reaches P91-M

Humanitarian assistance provided to families affected by the restive Kanlaon Volcano in Negros Occidental has reached P91,354,337.32, data from the Department of Social Welfare and Development Field Office 6 (DSWD-6) shows.

Also, the department said that most of the relief aid items include family food packs, non-food items and hot meals.

The total amount includes P65,757,041.32 from the DSWD; P10,971,484 from local government units; P6,169,118 from non-governmental organizations; and P8,456,954 from other stakeholders.

DSWD-6’s Disaster Response Operations Management, Information and Communication progress report No. 71 indicates that, as of noon yesterday, a total of 7,900 families or 24,891 individuals in 22 barangays were affected by Kanlaon’s unrest.

A total of 1,766 families or 5,657 people are currently taking temporary shelter in 14 evacuation centers, while another 2,105 families or 6,789 people are temporarily staying with relatives or friends.

Mount Kanlaon has remained under Alert Level 3 since December 9, 2024, indicating that further explosive events are possible.

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, Mount Kanlaon had a minor eruption on February 6, lasting about two minutes, based on seismic and infrasound records of the Kanlaon Volcano Network. (PIA-6)
