The Creamline Cool Smashers suffered their first loss in the PVL 2nd All-Filipino Conference, bowing to the PLDT High Speed Hitters, 30-28, 25-21, 23-25, 18-25, 16-14, at the Ynares Center in Antipolo City on Saturday night, February 15.
Negrense Bernadeth Pons paced the Cool Smashers with 23 points, including 20 attacks, but the reigning champions suffered their first defeat of the conference to drop to a 9-1 record.
Savannah Davison waxed hot with 34 points, built on 29 attacks and five blocks, to be named Player of the Game as the High Speed Hitters notched their seventh victory in 10 games.
Mary Joy Baron added 15 markers, while Ilongga Fiola Ceballos contributed 14 points.
Mika Reyes and Erika Santos had 12 and 11 points, respectively, for PLDT, which notched their third straight win over Creamline.
After dropping the third and fourth set, the High Speed Hitters found themselves trailing 5-8 in the fifth set before Baron stepped up with consecutive hits followed by contributions from Kim Kianna Dy and Ceballos to take an 11-9 lead.
Pons carried the fight for the Cool Smashers as they forced several deadlocks, including the last at 14-all, before the High Speed Hitters got an attack from Davison, and a block from Ceballos to seal the win.
Diana Carlos chipped in 16 markers for the Cool Smashers.
Jessica Galanza and Bea de Leon ended with 11 points each./ASC, WDJ
