The Commission on Elections (Comelec) in Iloilo City has reminded citizens they are duty-bound to reject any form of electoral fraud, especially vote-buying, which erodes public trust and weakens government institutions.
Iloilo Provincial Election Supervisor Lawyer Reinier Layson advised both the candidates and the voters to uphold the integrity of the 2025 midterm elections, noting that it is the cornerstone of the country’s democracy.
“Let us send a strong message today that Iloilo will not be swayed by money politics, intimidation, or deceit as we will stand together to protect the sanctity of the ballots, and uphold the will of the people,” he pointed out.
Layson emphasized that the integrity of the elections rests on the collective efforts of the public and the candidates, citing the need to reject any prohibited act, including vote-buying and election violence.
He said this during the peace-covenant signing led by the Iloilo Police Provincial Office (IPPO) and the poll body, together with other government agencies, including the Philippine Information Agency, held at the IPPO headquarters at Camp Francisco Sumagaysay in Sta. Barbara, Iloilo.
Several candidates seeking for different local positions also signed the peace covenant, signifying their commitment to a just and peaceful election.
“To our candidates, you have the power to inspire, to respect the rule of law, and to champion your platforms based on genuine service rather than personal gain, and to set as an example of principled leadership,” Layson reminded the political aspirants, noting that the signing was more than just a ceremonial act.
Meanwhile, IPPO director Police Colonel Bayani Razalan vowed to ensure the safe conduct of elections, pledging to prevent any form of electoral violence as they are on top of the situation.
“The Philippine National Police remains unwavering in its mission to provide necessary security to support both the voters and the candidates. We recognize that the peaceful conduct of elections goes beyond law enforcement as it is a collective duty and a commitment that each of us shares for the betterment of our nation’s future,” Razalan added.
The event also featured the releasing of doves, signifying the commitment of all the stakeholders for a peaceful and just election. (PIA Iloilo)
