The Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings rode an all-around performance from Scottie Thompson in putting up a masterful 120-92 win against the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters in the PBA Season 49 Commissioner’s Cup on Wednesday, January 22.
The former league MVP dropped 22 points together with six rebounds and eight assists, helping the Gin Kings improve to 7-4 as they continue their bid to avoid the twice-to-win disadvantage for the seventh and eighth ranked teams.
Justin Brownlee was also on point with a double-double outing of 29 markers and 13 boards alongside six dimes, one steal and one block, while Troy Rosario and RJ Abarrientos churned out 14 points each.
For head coach Tim Cone, this by far is their best performance this conference.
“We haven’t put up a good game this conference, and tonight was one of those games where everything came together. We played well defensively, we executed really well,” Cone said.
Brownlee started it for Ginebra, pouring 20 of his overall output in the first half, which they ended with a 21-point cushion over the Elasto Painters, 66-45.
They then refused to slow down with the resident import firing a four-point shot for a 78-54 lead in the third period before a Rosario dunk and a Stephen Holt split made it a 29-point separation at 85-56.
Rain or Shine, however, retaliated behind the hot hands of Anton Asistio, whose three three-pointers enabled the once-streaking Elasto Painters to stage a 16-2 rampage and cut the gap to 15, 87-72.
Ginebra, though, responded with a run of its own, turning to Abarrientos, Thompson and Japeth Aguilar for a 15-2 run as they zoomed to a 102-74 advantage, which basically took the fight out of Rain or Shine.
Deon Thompson paced Rain or Shine with 23 points, 15 rebounds, three assists, and one block, while Asistios heroics ended with a 14-point outing together with five boards and two dimes. (GMA Integrated News)
