Authorities have heightened security measures in anticipation of the 2025 midterm elections period, which officially begins on January 12, including intensified checkpoints and strict enforcement of the gun ban.

During a press conference yesterday, Brigadier General Jack Wanky, chief of the Police Regional Office in Western Visayas, said they are now focused on intensifying checkpoints to ensure peaceful, orderly and honest elections.

He explained that checkpoints have already been established by various police stations ahead of the election period, streamlining preparations.

These checkpoints, he said, are mobile to prevent predictability and enhance effectiveness.

“The conduct of checkpoints is not static. From time to time, they move to areas, to places where they could not be patterned,” he added.

Licensed gun owners were reminded that carrying firearms will be prohibited starting January 12.

The Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO), on the other hand, also announced increased security operations, particularly as the election period coincides with the Dinagyang Festival.

“Let us work together to maintain safety and create a secure environment for residents and visitors during this critical period,” ICPO Director Colonel Kim Legada said in a statement.

Authorities urged public cooperation to ensure compliance and uphold peace and order. (PNA)
