Sustained rains have caused flooding in some parts of Negros Occidental’s Victorias City this week, as evacuation and relief efforts have been ongoing for the affected residents.

Eight families from Barangay 21 have been evacuated following flashfloods, Victorias City Mayor Javier Miguel Benitez said in a statement yesterday.

The City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office swiftly mobilized rescue units to assist affected communities.

As the floodwaters rose, the City Social Welfare and Development Office distributed food packs to the affected households on Monday, December 23.

Benitez said the “flood was the first of its magnitude in the city,” despite ongoing improvements to the drainage system and flood control operations that started in 2022 under the dredging project.

He noted that the city government made strides in enhancing its flood control measures, including the widening, clearing and desilting of waterways in local rivers and creeks.

However, Victorias City’s natural topography as a catch basin means it is particularly vulnerable to prolonged heavy rains and high tides.

The water levels had receded significantly, and all affected families were reported to be safe with no remaining floodwater in their homes, Benitez said.

However, officials observed that current agricultural activities are hindering drainage efficiency.

The ongoing harvest season has limited water absorption from crops, contributing to an accumulation of floodwater in lower-lying areas.

The Victorias City government has decided to cancel its New Year’s celebration scheduled for January 1.

Instead, efforts will focus on community service and reinforcing drainage systems.

Benitez also announced plans to mobilize stakeholders and volunteers to clean drainage canals, assess floodwater paths, and identify potential egress points.

A meeting is set for January 6, 2025 with stakeholders and members of the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council to discuss both short-term and long-term strategies for preventing future flooding incidents./JB, WDJ
