Sleigh bells ring, are you listening?
In the lane, snow is glistening
A beautiful sight
We’re happy tonight
Walking in a winter wonderland
— Richard Himber, “Winter Wonderland” (1934)
In the heart of Bacolod City, a magical transformation occurs each holiday season as Bamboo Tonogbanua opens the doors to his stunning miniature Christmas village.
This enchanting display, a mix of moving and stationary elements, which he has meticulously crafted over the years, showcases a collection of miniature houses and festive scenery that captures the spirit of Christmas.
The Christmas village features various themed sections, such as a Bethlehem scene, Mexican houses, Chinese architecture, a Chinatown, a European collection, ‘50s scenery, and even a Disney-themed mini-village.
Among the standout features is the intricate Pirates Chest display near the entrance, showcasing a vibrant Pirates of the Caribbean theme.
Tonogbanua’s home has become a beloved destination for locals and tourists alike during the holiday season, drawing visitors eager to experience the magic of his creations.
The centerpiece remains his expansive Christmas village, housed in a dedicated room where houses line a picturesque snowy mountainside.
As a child, Tonogbanua said he was fascinated with Western Christmas — winter scenery, Santa Clauses and snow-covered houses.
His collection began in 1996 with a simple plywood setup.
“I started with just one piece. In 1996, I created my first display using plywood,” he recalls.
With an impressive collection of miniature houses and festive scenery, his Christmas village is a labor of love.
“Every year, I add to it. I collect pieces from my travels, and it has grown into what you see today,” he said.
His passion for creating this little festive wonderland is evident in every detail.
Each section reflects Tonogbanua’s artistic vision and the collaborative efforts of his friends, who are also artists.
“I created the concept, but many friends helped me build this Christmas village,” he said.
The essence of Christmas, according to Tonogbanua, lies in joy and sharing.
“I love sharing my collection with others,” he states.
Visitors will be captivated by the level of detail, creating an immersive experience that transports them to another world.
The miniature Christmas village on 90 San Juan-San Sebastian Streets in Bacolod City will be open daily starting December 16, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Tonogbanua’s masterpiece invites all ages to step into a world of festive cheer and creativity.
With each visit, guests leave with not only memories but also a renewed sense of wonder at the artistry that brings this holiday tradition to life.
As Christmas approaches, Tonogbanua’s village stands as a testament to the joy of sharing and community spirit. A reminder that the holiday season is about more than just decorations — it’s about creating connections and celebrating life’s simple pleasures./JB, WDJ
