The chief of the Visayas Command pinned an achievement medal yesterday to a K9 dog who played a major role in a series of encounters and led soldiers in discovering the corpse of a member of the New People’s Army and a firearm.
Lt. Gen. Fernando Reyeg, Viscom chief, conferred the Military Working Dog Achievement Medal to “Itum,” an aspin (local breed) tracking dog, for exemplary performance of duty during the conduct of a four-day pursuit operation from November 21 to 24 against NPA members in Barangay Gatuslao, Candoni in Negros Occidental.
“Today, we not only honor our brave soldiers but also recognize the invaluable contributions of our K9 partners. Itum’s exceptional performance exemplifies the critical role that our K9 partners play in ensuring mission success,” Reyeg said in a statement.
The operation resulted in the neutralization of eight NPAs and the recovery of several war materials including eight high-powered firearms.
Reyeg said Itum’s participation has underscored the effectiveness of both human and canine collaboration in combat operations.
“Itum’s keen senses and determination were instrumental in tracking down the withdrawing NPA terrorists, leading to another breakthrough in the operation,” he added.
Apart from pinning the medal to the K9 dog in the memorable ceremony on Sunday, December 1, 14 personnel from both the 47th and 15th Infantry Battalions were also recognized for their heroism. (PNA)
