The Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office (NOCPPO) has reported a 12.81 percent decline in crime rate in the province this year.

From January 1 to November 25, the NOCPPO recorded 3,525 crime incidents this year, lower than 4,043 incidents in the same period in 2023.

The report was presented during the Police Regional Office in Western Visayas command conference last November 28.

The NOCPPO said 414 eight-focus crimes were recorded this year, lower than 664 cases logged in 2023, with notable decreases including rape (down by 51.61 percent), physical injuries (decreased by 35.42 percent), robbery (down by 25.49 percent), homicide (down by 22.45 percent), and murder (down by 8.16 percent).

Motorcycle carnapping cases declined by 64.71 percent, the report said.

The NOCPPO saw a 7.34 percent decrease in the Peace and Order Indicator, measuring peace and order in a community, translating to 216 fewer incidents, while the Public Safety Indicator posted a 27.48 percent decline in the number of incidents, from 1,099 to 797.

NOCPPO Director Colonel Rainerio de Chavez attributed these positive outcomes to several strategic initiatives implemented by the provincial police force.

De Chavez said enhanced police operations, intensified police visibility and effective law enforcement operations have all played crucial roles in reducing crime rates.

Community engagement through programs, such as Oplan Dasig, and local ordinances fostered a safer environment for residents.

The NOCPPO also recorded 794 vehicular accidents, lower than last year’s 1,093.

De Chavez said the decline was attributed to the implementation of local traffic ordinances, the conduct of road safety seminars, the establishment of checkpoints, and the facilitation of traffic information.

As the holiday season approaches, De Chavez urged residents to cooperate with law enforcement efforts to maintain peace and safety in the province.

Intensified operations

The NOCPPO has significantly intensified its anti-illegal drug operations this year.

From January 1 to November 25, the NOCPPO conducted 914 operations, leading to the arrest of 1,130 drug personalities and the seizure of over 5,829 grams of shabu and 1,526 grams of marijuana, valued at more than P39 million.

In addition to drug-related efforts, NOCPPO has made strides in other areas of law enforcement.

The provincial police office conducted 198 operations against loose firearms, resulting in the arrest of 205 individuals and confiscation of 226 firearms.

The campaign against illegal gambling yielded 737 operations, leading to 2,401 arrests and the seizure of more than P617,000 in betting money.

Furthermore, police efforts against illegal fishing and logging have also shown significant results, with hundreds of arrests and substantial confiscations.

De Chavez credited these accomplishments to the unwavering dedication of his personnel and community support.

He emphasized the importance of recognizing officers’ contributions during ceremonies to boost morale and encourage further efforts.

The heightened focus on community involvement has proven essential, as local vigilance plays a crucial role in reporting illegal activities./JB, WDJ
