Negros Occidental has reported a staggering increase in the number of dengue cases, with 5,686 as of November 9, the Provincial Health Office (PHO) said in a report.
This marks a 326.56 percent rise — or 4,353 additional cases — compared to 1,333 cases recorded in the same period in 2023, the PHO said.
The age group most affected by dengue is between 11 and 20 years old.
Bago City leads local government units (LGUs) with the highest number of dengue cases with 674, followed by San Carlos City (439), and Hinoba-an town (413).
Other LGUs include Sagay City (353), Talisay City (351), Kabankalan City (340), Silay City (340), Cauayan town (338), Cadiz City (302), and Sipalay City (281).
Despite the sharp increase in cases, the total number of deaths remains relatively low, with 16 fatalities recorded.
Cadiz City has logged two dengue fatalities, while Sagay, Talisay, Kabankalan, Silay, and Sipalay each reported one death.
Health authorities urge the public to remain vigilant and proactive in preventing dengue by eliminating mosquito breeding grounds, using protective measures and seeking immediate medical attention at the onset of symptoms.
Intensified campaigns and community efforts are ongoing to curb the spread of dengue./JB, WDJ
