The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the haze experienced in Cebu and nearby provinces is not a result of the continuous volcanic activity of Kanlaon Volcano.

Mari-Andylene Quintia, a volcanologist at the Phivolcs’ Kanlaon Volcano Observatory, said volcanic smog, commonly referred to as “vog,” from Kanlaon does not typically reach Cebu province.

Quintia said the haze in other areas is caused by the incoming typhoon.

This is caused by climate-induced air pollution, which can be exacerbated by recent weather patterns.

Phivolcs has been receiving reports of haze being observed in some areas in Luzon aside from Cebu, such as Bacolod and other parts of Negros Occidental.

While the current haze does not pose an immediate health threat to most residents, those with pre-existing respiratory conditions are advised to take precautions.

Local health authorities recommend wearing masks and limiting outdoor activities, especially for vulnerable groups.

The state weather bureau, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration, said light haze may persist due to a lack of strong winds capable of dispersing pollutants.

Meanwhile, the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) has identified the primary cause of the haze as a meteorological phenomenon known as temperature inversion.

This occurs when a layer of warm air traps cooler air — and consequently pollutants — close to the ground, leading to increased levels of air pollution.

EMB Director Ma. Victoria Abrera reported that air quality measurements in Cebu City have risen significantly from 32 to 65 micrograms per cubic meter.

Although this level still falls within the “fair” range, it indicates a notable increase in air pollution, she said./JB, WDJ
