The University of Santo Tomas (UST) Growling Tigresses vented their ire at the University of the East (UE) Lady Warriors with a dominant 84-62 victory in the UAAP Season 87 women’s basketball tournament at the Smart Araneta Coliseum over the weekend.
Negrense Kent Jane Pastrana had a near triple-double of 18 points, eight assists and seven rebounds, to go with four steals as the Growling Tigresses improved to a 10-2 record.
Ilongga Ana Tacatac top-scored for UST with 22 points, including six three-point conversions, while rookie Karylle Sierba contributed 16 markers in the dominant win.
Down 13-15 after the opening quarter, the Growling Tigresses turned things around in the second period with a 22-9 scoring blast to take a 35-24 advantage at the half.
The Growling Tigresses continued their rampage in the second half as the lead reached its largest at 22 points at 84-62 late in the second quarter after a conversion from Tacatac.
“I think we have to correct our turnovers. Madami pa rin,” said Growling Tigresses head coach Haydee Ong regarding their 26 turnovers in the match.
Rachel Lacayanga and Kamba Kone finished with 22 markers apiece to lead the Lady Warriors, which dropped to a 1-11 win-loss card with the loss.
Meanwhile, the Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles completed the Final Four cast after eliminating the Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws, 85-70.
They improved to a 7-5 win-loss slate.
Reigning MVP Kacey dela Rosa tallied her 12th consecutive double-double with 24 points and 18 rebounds, Nigerian center Sarah Makanjoula added 21 points and 11 rebounds, while rookie Kai Oani contributed 14 points for the Blue Eagles./ASC, WDJ
