The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has maintained Alert Level 2 over Kanlaon Volcano, signifying moderate volcanic unrest, despite recent ash emissions, elevated sulfur dioxide levels and numerous volcanic earthquakes.
In the past 24 hours, Phivolcs said Kanlaon showed signs of heightened activity, including three ash explosions lasting 10 to 12 minutes, which sent a thick ash plume up to 800 meters into the air.
Twenty-five volcanic earthquakes have been recorded, suggesting magma movement beneath the surface, Phivolcs said.
Sulfur dioxide emissions reached 3,010 tons per day as of Sunday, November 10, indicating increased volcanic activity.
Ground deformation continues to be observed, signaling possible magma buildup.
Although the recent unrest does not warrant an elevation to Alert Level 3, the agency stresses that Kanlaon could still produce sudden steam-driven or phreatic explosions.
Magmatic eruptions may also occur if the pressure within the volcano continues to increase.
Residents and tourists are reminded that entry into the four-kilometer permanent danger zone (PDZ) is strictly prohibited.
The PDZ is at risk of sudden explosions, ash falls, and other hazardous volcanic activities, Phivolcs said.
While the current activity at Kanlaon remains moderate, Phivolcs warns that conditions may change rapidly./JB, WDJ
