Luis “Chavit” Singson, former Ilocos Sur governor and respected benefactor of Philippine sports, is making waves as he announces his candidacy for the Senate in the upcoming May 2025 midterm elections.

Singson has pledged that the welfare of Filipino athletes will be a top priority in his legislative agenda.

“Filipino athletes hold a special place in my heart. They work tirelessly to bring pride and glory to our country,” Singson stated.

“The government should always support our athletes, and I am willing to open my wallet to ensure they have everything they need,” he added.

Known for his generosity, Singson has a rich history in sports philanthropy.

He previously served as president of the Philippine National Shooting Association, and has been a long-time friend and supporter of boxing icon Manny Pacquiao.

Currently, he is helping former Olympian Charly Suarez launch his professional boxing career.

Under Singson’s mentorship, Suarez recently achieved No. 1 contender status for the WBO super featherweight championship.

“I may be his manager, but I don’t expect anything from him,” Singson said.

“Whatever he earns belongs to him and his family,” the former governor added.

One of Singson’s most notable commitments involves helping gymnast Carlos Yulo, who won two gold medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Acknowledging Yulo’s family struggles, Singson is prepared to provide P5 million to help mend familial ties, and an additional P1 million to Yulo’s family to settle their differences.

“Filipinos are very family-oriented. I want everyone to be happy. That will be my gift to Filipino sports fans,” Singson said.

Beyond sports, Singson is advocating for broader economic reforms, proposing a Universal Basic Income Bill that would grant P500 monthly to all Filipinos aged 18 and above who earn minimum wage.

“This should be a law for everyone, and I’ll name it ‘Chavit P500’ to ensure it’s unique,” he quipped.

Singson plans to launch the “Banko ng Masa” initiative by December, which aims to provide bank accounts and credit cards to 77 percent of Filipinos who currently lack access to banking services.

“We’ll give bank accounts to everyone without them needing to visit a bank, using online services,” Singson explained.

Additionally, Singson is set to bring his factory from Korea to Lipa, Batangas, to mass-produce electric vehicles, supporting the national government’s modernization program for public transport.

He has assured President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. that he will provide electric vehicles, motorcycles and tricycles with zero downpayment and zero interest, and no guarantees required from drivers.

With his unwavering commitment to Filipino athletes and innovative economic proposals, Singson is ready to make a significant impact in the Senate if elected.

His vision focuses on uplifting both the athletic community and the broader Filipino populace, ensuring a brighter future for all./JB, WDJ
