Kanlaon Volcano, one of the most active volcanoes in the Philippines, has emitted a total of 6,477 tons of sulfur dioxide for the past six days, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

From October 20 to 25, two volcanic earthquakes were recorded at Kanlaon, Phivolcs said in a report.

The volcano continues to show signs of “swelling,” indicating the presence of magma beneath the surface.

Kanlaon remains under Alert Level 2, which signals increasing unrest.

Phivolcs warns that the possibility of a phreatic eruption — an explosion of steam and gas — remains high.

Residents and tourists are strictly prohibited from entering the four-kilometer permanent danger zone surrounding the volcano.

The public is advised to remain cautious and heed the warnings from authorities, as sudden steam-driven eruptions may occur without warning.

Kanlaon is located in the provinces of Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental, and local disaster risk management agencies are monitoring the situation closely./JB, WDJ
