Barangay Granada in Bacolod City, is a pilot area for the rainwater catchment program of the Local Water Utilities Administration (LWUA), which aims to enhance water resource management in the community.

Mona Dia Jardin, general manager of the Bacolod City Water District (Baciwa), said yesterday that the small-scale rainwater catchment facility they inaugurated on Wednesday, August 28, is beside the barangay hall to make it accessible to the residents.

“The facility’s cost is shouldered and donated by the Office of the LWUA Chairman Ronnie Ong. Baciwa provided the roofing to protect the facility,” she said in an interview.

The design is a one-cubic-meter, equivalent to 1,000 liters, rainwater collector tank system.

Jardin said Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez endorsed Barangay Granada, headed by village chief Armando Vito, to host the rainwater catchment facility as it is in an upland area where there is frequent rainfall.

She added that the location beside the barangay hall is strategic as it is near a fire station, adjacent to a gymnasium, and just behind the public market.

“Those needing water can just attach a hose, and they can already avail of the water supply,” Jardin said.

Dubbed “Catch Me I’m Falling,” the LWUA program selected five local water districts across the country for its initial implementation, including Bacolod, the only pilot site in the Visayas. (PNA)
