Filipina tennis sensation Alex Eala’s dream run at the 2024 US Open has come to an end after a tough loss to 128th ranked Elena Gabriela Ruse.

The 28-year-old Romanian came from behind to win 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.

The first set saw both players breaking each other’s serve for the first four games until Eala finally held serve and took a 3-2 lead.

From there, Eala took the momentum and eventually took the first set, 6-3.

At the midpoint of the first set, Ruse was already complaining to the umpire about the cheers from the dominant Filipino crowd, reminding them not to cheer while a point is being played and on her errors or service faults.

Ruse was even seen covering her head with a towel in between the first and second set to try to tune out the crowd.

But the second set looked like a complete turnaround for Ruse, who quickly dominated the 19-year-old Filipina, racing to a 4-0 lead after breaking Eala’s serve twice.

With the score 4-1, Eala took a medical timeout and asked for a PT to stretch out what seemed to be a sore right hip.

Ruse ended up finishing off the second set, 6-1.

During the set break, Eala continued to get work on her right hip, while Ruse herself needed a medical timeout to tape up a blister on her left foot.

The third and final set went back and forth with both players showing their grit and determination as it was tied at 3-3.

From that point, Ruse broke Eala’s serve, then held serve and led 5-3.

Eala managed to win one more game, but Ruse took advantage of her service again and win the third set 6-4 to seal the match.

Eala, who came into the US Open qualifiers ranked 148 in the world, will likely rise in the rankings after coming one win away from qualifying for her first grand slam after winning the US Open Juniors title in 2022. (ABS-CBN News)
