The Philippines closed its campaign in the 2024 Paris Olympics on Saturday, August 10 (Philippine time), as golfers Bianca Pagdanganan and Dottie Ardina ended their runs as well in the women’s individual stroke event.
Pagdanganan narrowly missed the podium as she finished in joint fourth with Australia’s Hannah Green, while Ardina ended up at T13 with four other golfers.
With that, the Philippines will officially bring home two gold medals from gymnast Carlos Yulo, and two bronze medals from boxers Aira Villegas and Nesthy Petecio.
Who are the medalists?
Gymnastics ace Yulo won the country’s first and only gold medals in the Summer Games after ruling the floor exercise and vault finals in men’s gymnastics. He became the country’s first Olympic medalist in gymnastics and the first to win multiple medals in a single edition of the Games. He also joined the list of multi-medalled Olympians, such as Teofilo Yldefonso, Hidilyn Diaz and Nesthy Petecio.
Boxer Villegas settled for a bronze medal in her Olympic debut. She was already assured of an Olympic medal when she punched a ticket to the semis where she fell to Türkiye’s Buse Naz Cakiroglu.
Boxing’s Petecio claimed her second Olympic medal as she bagged the bronze medal in the women’s 57-kilogram event. She fell to Poland’s Julia Szeremeta in the semifinals. She became boxing’s first two-time medalist following her silver in Tokyo three years ago. (GMA Integrated News)
