A former member of the dismantled New People’s Army-Northern Negros Front provided crucial information to the Philippine Army that led to the recovery of hidden weapons in an encounter at Barangay Pinapugasan in Negros Occidental’s Escalante City last February.
According to a statement from the 79th Infantry Battalion, the surrendered rebel disclosed the location where one 5.56mm assault rifle (M653) with seven live rounds, and a short magazine were hidden.
The former rebel’s decision to provide information was motivated by the recognition of the Army’s sincerity in supporting his journey to restart life with his family.
On July 29, two M14 rifles, one Garand rifle, one 12-gauge shotgun and corresponding ammunition were recovered in the mountainous area of Don Salvador Benedicto town, based on intelligence shared by former rebels.
The events underscore efforts toward peace and stability in the province, highlighting the importance of cooperation between former rebels and government forces in addressing security challenges./JB, WDJ
