A money lender was stabbed to death by a farmer over unpaid debt at Barangay Minapasuk in Negros Occidental’s Calatrava town on Saturday, August 3.
Police identified the victim as 60-year-old Elisio Cabugnay, a resident of the town’s Barangay Hinab-ongan.
Calatrava police chief, Captain Jesus Alba, said Cabugnay sustained multiple hack wounds.
Alba said the victim went to the house of the 47-year-old suspect to collect the P2,000 debt.
The suspect asked Cabugnay to pay him rice, instead of cash, because of insufficient funds.
The victim reportedly refused and got angry, resulting in a heated argument.
Alba said the suspect’s wife intervened to pacify them, but Cabugnay allegedly slapped her.
The suspect was irked and hacked the victim with a bolo.
Cabugnay was rushed to a hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
The suspect surrendered to village officials after the incident, and he is now detained at the police station./WDJ
