Filipino gymnast Carlos Yulo is on track to qualify for the all-around finals, as well as the final of two apparatus in the men’s artistic gymnastics competition at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
After Subdivision 2 of the qualifiers at the Bercy Arena on Saturday night, July 27, Yulo is currently ranked sixth in the vault, and second in the floor exercise, as well as eighth overall.
Only the top 24 gymnasts — a maximum of two from each country — will make it to the all-around final.
Meanwhile, only the Top 8 gymnasts in each apparatus — a maximum of two from each country as well — will qualify for the apparatus final.
After his subdivision, Yulo is currently eighth in the all-around rankings, with a total score of 83.631.
Yulo, a former world champion in the floor exercise, scored 14.766 in the apparatus, which put him behind Jake Jarman of Great Britain (14.966).
Jarman had competed in Subdivision 1 earlier in the day.
Meanwhile, Yulo is sixth in vault after a combined score of 14.683.
He had made the vault final three years ago in Tokyo, eventually placing fourth.
He also won the gold medal in the apparatus in the 2021 World Championships.
However, Yulo failed to advance in the parallel bars — an apparatus where he won silver in the 2021 World Championships, and gold in the 2022 Asian Championships.
He scored 14.533 after his routine, which had a difficulty of six — well below the 6.900 of China’s Zou Jingyuan, who was leading the way in the apparatus.
Yulo scored 13.066 on the pommel horse, 13 in the rings, and 13.466 on the horizontal bar.
China’s Zhang Boheng currently has the highest all-around score of 88.597.
Yulo will learn his fate later in the day, after Subdivision 3 concludes the qualifiers.
The gymnast is the second Filipino athlete to see action in the Paris Olympics, after rower Joanie Delgaco, who competed in the heats of the women’s single sculls earlier. (ABS-CBN News)
