The Negros Occidental Provincial Health Office (PHO) reported an increase in the number of dengue cases in the province, with a 17.4 percent surge compared to the same period last year.

Latest data showed the PHO recorded a total of 874 dengue cases this year, which was higher than the 712 cases logged as of June 29.

The cities of Sipalay, Cadiz, San Carlos, Silay, Kabankalan, Talisay, Victorias, and Sagay, as well as the municipalities of Hinoba-an and Cauayan recorded the most number of cases.

The majority of cases were children aged one to 10 years old.

Three dengue-related deaths were recorded this year.

The PHO has also identified localities that need to be closely monitored, including areas that recorded a high number of cases.

PHO head Dr. Girlie Pinongan is urging residents to take extra precautions amid the rise in dengue cases.

Pinongan added that they are working to raise awareness about the importance of taking preventive measures against dengue.

“It is very important to clean up our surroundings, including water containers and drains, to prevent the breeding of mosquitoes that carry the dengue virus,” she said.

Residents are advised to wear protective clothing and apply insect repellent when outdoors, use mosquito nets and screens to prevent mosquito bites, and seek medical attention immediately if symptoms appear./JB, WDJ
