More than 30 families remained at evacuation centers in Negros Occidental’s La Castellana town following the phreatic eruption of Kanlaon Volcano earlier this month.
John de Asis, head of the La Castellana Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, said more than 30 families living within Kanlaon’s four-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone need to stay in the evacuation center.
Their return to their homes will depend on the situation of the volcano.
Around 190 families or 689 residents returned to Barangay Cabagna-an on Friday, June 21, while 179 families or 561 residents returned to Barangay Sag-ang on Thursday, June 20.
About 170 more families or 565 residents also returned to Cabagna-an last week.
Meanwhile, Kanlaon Volcano remains under Alert Level 2, indicating that a phreatic eruption is possible and hazardous activity is ongoing.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology continues to monitor volcanic activities closely, and advises residents to remain vigilant and prepared for any potential hazards.
Residents are reminded to stay informed about any updates on the volcano’s activity and to follow instructions from local authorities to ensure their safety./JB, WDJ
