Local officials in Negros Occidental welcome a proposal to increase the share of local government units (LGUs) from the National Tax Allotment (NTA).

Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson said the NTA is a recognition of LGUs’ role in nation building.

Lacson hopes that the increased NTA is in addition to the Mandanas-Garcia ruling which benefits LGUs.

Meanwhile, Association of Chief Executives in Negros president and Victorias City Mayor Javier Miguel Benitez said the NTA hike is a very positive development.

Benitez said there is currently a devolution and transition plan, as well as devolution of funds for devolved functions.

He said that he had recently talked with some local officials, as they fully supported the proposal, one of the promises of President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. during his early months in office.

Earlier, House Speaker Martin Romualdez made an assurance that the House of Representatives would heed Marcos’ call for LGUs to get a bigger share of the national budget.

The House of Representatives is now deliberating bills that seek to hike the NTA allotment for LGUs./DGB, WDJ
