A local farmers group has affirmed its commitment to sell rice at P25 per kilo amid the challenges posed by the dry spell affecting farmers in Negros Occidental.

Pedro Limpangog, president of the Federation of Irrigators Association-Central Negros-Bago River Irrigation System (BRIS), announced plans for another rice initiative, as approximately 400 individuals recently availed of the P25 per kilo of rice in Pulupandan town.

“We will gather our produce, especially during the upcoming harvest next month, and offer rice at a significantly reduced cost to senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and less fortunate or indigent residents,” Limpangog said.

Covering approximately 11,000 hectares of rice fields in central Negros, the BRIS project plays a crucial role in supporting local agriculture.

Limpangog mentioned that due to the ongoing dry spell, the National Irrigation Administration (NIA-BRIS) would implement a water delivery system or scheduled water supply in covered areas.

He also highlighted that farmers strive to break even in their production efforts.

Areas under NIA-BRIS coverage remain unaffected by the drought conditions, unlike those in the southern part of the province.

Most farmlands in Negros Occidental heavily rely on rainfall.

Limpangog also emphasized their vigilance in monitoring the irrigation system.

He added that the NIA-BRIS collaborates closely with village officials to monitor and deter residents from disposing of their garbage into irrigation canals./DGB, WDJ
