The Negros Occidental provincial government is now studying a proposal which seeks to revive the seaport facility in Cauayan town’s Barangay Bulata.

Cauayan Mayor John Rey Tabujara said the municipal government has already consulted Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson to determine if the Maricalum Mining Corporation (MMC), the former Bulata Port operator, is still committed to resuming operations.

Tabujara also emphasized the need for the provincial government’s assistance, especially outstanding taxes, in reviving the port.

He revealed that a Japanese company, Tsuneishi Heavy Industries, also expressed their interest in operating the facility.

Meanwhile, Lacson clarified that MMC has properties at the seaport that need assessment from the provincial government.

The renewed operation of the area might affect Danjugan Island, situated across the town, he added.

Lacson said the proposal will improve the port, as he acknowledged its potential contribution to the town’s economy, especially in providing employment opportunities for residents./DGB, WDJ
