An elections officer in Kabankalan City has resigned, Commission on Elections (Comelec) in Negros Occidental supervisor Ian Lee Ananoria confirmed yesterday.
Ananoria said Atty. Jonna Cabanilla resigned for personal reasons.
“I would like to personally inform you that I have already resigned from Comelec. I am no longer connected as of today,” Cabanilla said in a statement.
“I have been receiving threats to my safety. Hence, I came up with such a decision,” she added.
Ananoria said Cabanilla paid P2,000 for each 660 poll support staff she hired for the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections last year.
The support staff complained earlier that they were not paid their honoraria for serving during the electoral process.
Senior election assistant Analliza Edral took over the post left by Cabanilla.
Ananoria said Cabanilla, despite her resignation, could still face criminal and civil charges.
He confirmed that her case is still pending at the Comelec head office./WDJ
