‘Cracker-related injuries; PHO logs 21 firecracker-related injuries in NegOcc

A total of 21 firecracker-related injuries were recorded over the past few days leading to New Year’s Day in Negros Occidental, the Provincial Health Office (PHO) said.

PHO head Dr. Girlie Pinongan said the recorded firecracker injuries were from December 26, 2023 to January 1, 2024.

The monitoring for firecracker-related injuries will be until Saturday, January 6.

PHO’s records revealed that most victims of fireworks-related injuries were aged seven to 57 years old, while most victims of firecrackers were aged 11 to 20 years old.

Eleven fireworks-related injuries were caused by boga, while one amputation case was recorded in Kabankalan City.

Pinongan said most cases of firecracker-related injuries were children who picked up unexploded firecrackers.

Meanwhile, the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital in Bacolod City admitted several firecracker victims on New Year’s Eve.

A 31-year-old man from Hinigaran town had his hands amputated as he suffered injuries after he picked up an unexploded firecracker.

Several motorists who got into road accidents were also admitted.

 

‘Generally peaceful’

Meanwhile, the Bacolod City Police Office (BCPO) said yesterday the celebration of New Year’s Day in the city was generally peaceful.

Lt. Colonel Ronnie Brillo, BCPO administrative officer, said there were no reported crime incidents during the revelry.

Brillo said he was thankful for the cooperation of the residents.

As of yesterday, the City Health Office recorded five fireworks-related injuries in the city.

The city government held a New Year countdown at the Bacolod City Government Center grounds.

A synchronized fireworks display was also held at the Bacolod public plaza and at the Old Bacolod Airport.

Thousands of Bacolodnons gathered at the venues to witness a fireworks display.
