A resolution was passed by the Bacolod Sangguniang Panlungsod urging city residents to reduce pollution this Christmas season.

In the resolution, Councilor Em Ang said Christmas is one of the most widely celebrated holidays in the Philippines.

The yuletide is also the biggest season for retail and commercial activities that generate unnecessary trash, use precious resources and create a large carbon footprint.

“We can each help cut back on the impact of pollution generated during the season by exchanging environment-friendly Christmas gifts; and using green Christmas trees, homemade decorations, LED [light-emitting diode] lights to save on energy,” Ang said.

She added that reusing or recycling wrapping paper, wrapping gifts in reusable bags and patronizing products of organizations known to implement green practices will help reduce carbon footprint.

Aside from keeping parties clean, residents can also benefit by segregating biodegradable, recyclable and unusable wastes as well as holding activities that would promote environmental causes, such as tree-planting.

“Amid the celebrations, Bacolodnons should be responsible for disposing trash, so as not to wreak havoc on our already degraded environment,” she stressed./MS, WDJ
