A popular Bacolodnon reggae singer was killed after he was accidentally run over by a truck along Circumferential Road in Bacolod City’s Barangay Mandalagan early yesterday morning.
Juan Manuel Ubaldo, also known as “Kokoi Baldo,” was driving his motorcycle heading to his home after a music gig, Police Station 3 said.
Based on initial police investigation, Ubaldo, a resident of Barangay Estefania, was following three trucks and a pick-up.
The 44-year-old singer overtook the pick-up.
He accidentally slid and was run over by the truck driven by 49-year-old Benny Flor, a resident of Bago City’s Barangay Sampinit.
Baldo was killed after his head was crushed by the truck’s rear tire.
Police said Ubaldo was carrying a helmet but failed to use it.
Meanwhile, Flor was arrested and detained at the station’s custodial facility following the incident.
Flor was not aware that he hit the victim as he was being chased by the pick-up driver, police said.
Ubaldo gained fame after he competed in the reality singing competition “The Voice of the Philippines” in 2014.
Meanwhile, Bacolod Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez, in a statement, said he was shocked and saddened by Ubaldo’s untimely passing.
“Many of us have connected with him through his music. My heartfelt condolences to his family and friends during this most difficult time. May his soul rest in peace,” Benitez said./DGB, WDJ
