University of Santo Tomas (UST) Golden Tigresses stayed undefeated in the 2023 Shakey’s Super League Pre-Season tourney after a 25-21, 25-23, 25-14 triumph over Colegio de San Juan de Letran Lady Knights at the FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan on Monday, September 18.
Rookie Angeline Poyos had another solid showing as she finished with 13 points on 11 attacks, a service ace and a block as the Golden Tigresses cruised to a 2-0 win-loss record in Pool C.
Xyza Gula added nine markers, while Bacolodnon setter Cassie Carballo, Regina Jurado and Kyla Cordora also cashed in seven markers apiece in the Golden Tigresses’ scattered attack.
Even with a 2-0 start, Golden Tigresses head coach Emilio “Kung Fu” Reyes is still far from satisfied with the performance of his players, as he wants them to win the games more convincingly.
“Hindi pa kami satisfied. Kailangan bigyan pa namin ng diin. Siyempre, a win is a win, pero ‘yung level ng nilalaro namin, kailangan itaas pa,” Reyes said.
The Golden Tigresses will have a tough task in their final game in Pool C as they battle the two-time NCAA women’s volleyball champion, the College of St. Benilde Lady Blazers.
Marie Nitura finished with 12 points to lead the Lady Knights, which failed to give debuting head coach Oliver Almadro a winning start for his alma mater.
Meanwhile, Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws kicked off their Shakey’s Super League campaign with a 25-23, 25-14, 25-18 straight set romp over Mapua University Lady Cardinals.
Sophomore hitter Alyssa Devosora was named as the Player of the Game for the Lady Tamaraws as she finished with 18 points on 14 attacks and four service aces.
On the other hand, San Sebastian College-Recoletos Lady Stags prevailed over Jose Rizal University Lady Bombers, 25-20, 21-25, 25-20, 25-12. Zenith Deposoy was adjudged as the Player of the Game with 18 points./ASC, WDJ
