A sugarcane farmer died while two others were injured after they were allegedly hacked by their fellow “sakada” at Barangay Baliwagan in Negros Occidental’s San Enrique town on Sunday afternoon, August 27.

Suspect Raymund Langote is still at-large, police said.

The fatality was identified as 24-year-old Gilbert Brinio, while the wounded were Elmer Langote and Ronaldo Anacleto.

They were all residents of Antique province and were working as sugarcane workers in the town.

An initial police investigation revealed the victims were sleeping inside their barracks.

The suspect, without any apparent reason, allegedly hacked Brinio using a sugarcane cutter, police said.

Elmer and Anacleto tried to pacify the suspect, but they were also hacked, which caused them injuries.

Brinio was declared dead due to the injuries he sustained.

Ronaldo was brought to Don Salvador Benedicto Memorial Hospital in La Carlota City and in a stable condition, while Elmer was rushed to the provincial hospital in Silay City for medical treatment./MS, WDJ
