Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson hopes sugar prices will remain at P3,000 per bag as the milling season begins.
“Every time there is an importation, it is based on a study. So we will know right now that the studies made were accurate when the milling season started,” Lacson said.
Meanwhile, Negros Occidental 5th district Congressman Emilio Yulo said he is concerned that sugar prices will go down in the upcoming milling season.
Yulo said the prices this season may not reach last year’s price of P2,400 to P4,000 per sack.
He attributed the possible low price of sugar to the huge amount of stock sugar under the Sugar Regulatory Administration, which has not yet been released to the market.
Yulo said this will be a challenge, especially for small planters.
Problems can only be solved by higher productivity of the sugar industry, he added.
