Acting Bacolod City Mayor El Cid Familiaran appeals to residents not to give alms to Badjaos roaming around in the city.
The presence of Badjaos asking for alms along the streets in the city was rampant, especially when the MassKara Festival, celebrated every October, is approaching.
Familiaran said if nobody gives alms to them, they will not come back here.
He also asked the office of the Department of Social Services and Development to conduct an information and education drive into the consequences of residents giving alms.
The city official, designated by Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez, who was on official leave, to take over his post for a week until June 26, said there is a law which prohibited giving alms under the anti-mendicancy act.
The vice mayor believed that there was somebody behind these Badjaos.
Meanwhile, Bacolod City Police Office acting director, Colonel Noel Aliño said that they are willing to help the city government in case they need assistance in apprehending the Badjaos./MS, WDJ
