The Western Visayas (WV) elementary boys’ basketball team had a triumphant start in Cluster 3 of the National Pre-Palarong Pambansa Qualifying Meet at Sacred Heart-Ateneo de Cebu gymnasium in Cebu City yesterday.
The Ryan Nabor-mentored Region 6 team, represented by Bacolod Tay Tung High School, dominated Eastern Visayas from start to finish to score a 98-49 rout.
In the secondary boys’ basketball, Western Visayas, represented by Hua Siong College of Iloilo, survived a tough challenge from Eastern Visayas to hack out an 87-76 victory.
WV secondary girls’ volleyball team also had a winning start in the competition as they scored a 25-9, 25-11, 25-6 straight set win over Region 9 (Zamboanga Peninsula) at the USPF Gym.
The WV team, which was represented by Bacolod Tay Tung High School, leaned on the exploits of Katherine Shaine Cortez, Alex Montoro and Jothea Ramos to score the easy win.
The elementary girls’ volleyball team, also composed of athletes from Bacolod Tay Tung High School, also had a fiery start as they cruised to a straight set win over Region 9.
In elementary boys’ sepak takraw, Western Visayas, represented by Binangkilan Elementary School, bagged their first win after a 21-10, 21-6 win over Region 7 (Central Visayas).
In the secondary boys’ sepak takraw, Santa Barbara National Comprehensive High School, representing Region 6, executed early dominance to overpower Region 7’s Abellana National School, 2-0.
In secondary softball, Western Visayas, represented by Ramon Torres National High School, scored a 23-0 domination over Zamboanga Peninsula from Manokan National High School.
The top two teams from each will qualify for the Palarong Pambansa, which will be held later this year in Marikina City./ASC, WDJ
