The Department of Energy-Visayas Field Office (DOE-VFO) has urged power consumers to practice energy conservation amid the increasing demand for power in the region this summer.

The DOE provided some tips on how the public can conserve their energy consumption, which will result in lower electricity bills and a reduction in energy demand in general.

“Ang role natu as energy consumers is to conserve energy. There are a lot of ways to reduce energy consumption,” DOE-VFO chief, science research specialist Lourdes Arciaga said during the Kapihan sa PIA program conducted by the Philippine Information Agency on Wednesday, May 10.

Among the energy conservation tips DOE discussed is the practice of switching off lights if not needed and unplugging all electrical appliances when not in use.

The DOE also encouraged power consumers to regularly clean their appliances, especially air conditioner filters, electric fans, and refrigerator condenser coils.

Air conditioner cleaning should be done every six months.

They also promoted the use of solar energy through solar panels and the shift to energy-saving appliances and LED lights.

According to the DOE, an estimated 50 megawatts of power will be saved every day if the majority of consumers consistently practice energy conservation tips.

Meanwhile, the DOE also assured that the region currently has enough power supply, with 22 percent of the supply coming from renewable energy sources.

“While the government is doing all the efforts for energy-related projects natu, we have to do our part also, mag-conserve tag energy, mao na ang pinakadali,” Arciaga added during the same forum. (PIA-7)
