Ilonggo Robin Catalan added to Team Philippines’ gold medal haul in the 32nd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games after ruling his division in kun bokator at the Chroy Changvar Convention Centre in Phnom Penh, Cambodia yesterday, May 9.
The Iloilo City-native Catalan, who is a mixed martial artist by trade, captured the gold medal in the men’s combat minus-50 event after defeating Indonesian Ade Permana in the finals.
Meanwhile, Ilonggo Phillip Delarmino ended with a bronze medal in men’s combat 60 kilogram, same with Mitz Jalandoni (women’s singles phkak form), Godwin Langbayan and Ryan Jakiri (men’s combat 65kg), and women’s and men’s bare hands form trio.
Team Philippines also secured kun bokator silver medals from Mariane Mariano (women’s combat 55kg), Kylie Mallari (women’s combat 50kg), Ariel Lampacan (men’s combat 55kg), and Geli Bulaong (women’s combat 60kg).
Ilongga rider Ariana Evangelista settled for a silver medal in the MTB Cross-Country Eliminator (XCE) before taking home a bronze in the 14.80-km cycling event with Shagne Yaoyao, EJ Flores and Jerico Rivera.
Gymnast Carlos Edriel Yulo kept his individual all-around gold after tallying 84 points for floor exercise (14.350), vault (15), parallel bars (14), rings (14.150), pommel horse (12.650), and high bar (12.90).
Yulo, along with Juan Miguel Besana, Jan Gwyn Timbang and John Ivan Cruz, ended with a silver medal in the team event as they combined for 302.50 points behind gold medal winner Vietnam.
Ernest John “EJ” Obiena also won his third SEA Games men’s pole vault gold medal with his 5.65-meter leap, erasing the previous biennial games record of 5.46 meters that he set in Hanoi, Vietnam last year.
The quartet of Robyn Brown, Umajesty William, Mico del Prado, and Jessel Lumapas, captured an athletics bronze medal in the mixed 4×400 meter relay event.
Xiandi Chua delivered the country’s first swimming gold medal in Cambodia as she ruled the 200-m backstroke event in 2:13.20. Chloe Isleta ended with a silver medal with her 2:16.19 time.
Jasmine Alkhaldi and Jerald Jacinto had silver each in the women’s 100-meter freestyle and men’s 50-meter backstroke, respectively, while Teia Salvino won a bronze medal in the women’s 50-meter backstroke.
Fernando Casares bagged the gold medal in the men’s triathlon event, while compatriot Andre Kim Remolino settled for a bronze. Kim Mangrobang finished with a silver medal on the distaff side after being beaten by Cambodian naturalized player Margot Garabedian.
Jamie Lim captured a gold medal in the women’s -61kg women’s individual kumite before settling for silver in the women’s team kumite with Junna Tsukii, Remon Misu and Arianne Brito. Matthew Manantan also had a silver in the men’s -67kg event.
Marc Lim netted a jiu jitsu gold in men’s ne-waza nogi 69kg, Meggie Ochoa ended with silver in women’s ne-waza nogi 52kg, while Ian Patrick Gurrobat and Lesly Romero (mixed show pair), Estie Gay Liwanen and Christopher Gallego (mixed duo), and Jan Cortez (men’s ne-waza nogi -56kg) had bronze.
The women’s soft tennis squad of Bien Zoleta-Mañalac and Princess Catindig also captured a gold medal. The same goes with Sibol Pilipinas in the League of Legends: Wild Rift event.
In vovinam, Team Philippines took a silver medal courtesy of Emmanuel Cantores (men’s 60kg) and bronze medals from Jovan Medallo (men’s sun-moon broadsword), Rhenel Desuyo (men’s 65kg), Jerlyn Kingas (women’s 55kg), Jerome Alidon (men’s 55kg), and Janah Lavador (women’s aspect broadsword single form).
In pencak silat, Abad brothers Alfau Jan and Al-mohaidib won a silver in male seni ganda (artistic bouble), while the trio of Jessa dela Cruz, Shara Julia Jizmundo and Franchette Anne Elman bagged the bronze medal in seni regu (artistic trio) female event.
Team Philippines also has three bronzes in the kun Kummer courtesy of Jenelyn Olsim in the women’s 54kg category, Floryvic Montero in women’s 48kg and Rhichein Yosorez in women’s combat 45kg.
In windsurfing, Andrei Tugade took home a silver medal in men’s junior IQ foil, while Dhenver Castillo (men’s RS:One) and Harord Madrigal (men’s IQ foil) contributed a bronze medal each. Venice Narciso also clinched a bronze in the chess ouk chaktrang women’s singles 60-minute event./ASC, WDJ
