Rain, flood affect 144 brgys in WV

Some 144 barangays in the provinces of Capiz, Iloilo and Negros Occidental were affected by the rains and flooding in those areas.

This, according to a progress report from the Office of the Civil Defense in Western Visayas (OCD-6) as of May 4.

Based on the report, there were 48 flooded areas, 28 rain-induced landslides, two rockslides, and a mudslide were recorded across the region.

A total of 10,580 families or 44,052 individuals were affected, where 2,896 families or 11,022 individuals of these were evacuated to 86 evacuation centers, while 2,181 families or 8,592 persons were served outside of the evacuation centers.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development in Western Visayas has already given out a total of 5,807 family food packs, 790 hygiene kits and 59 sleeping kits to affected individuals in the provinces of Iloilo and Capiz.

Flooding also rendered some 37 road sections and four bridges not passable as of this writing.

Classes and work were also suspended in some areas in the region as a result of the natural calamity.

The OCD 6 is continuously monitoring the situation and in close coordination with the different provincial, city and municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Offices all over the region. (PIA-6)
