Following the discovery of disposed medical waste inside Handumanan public cemetery, the Bacolod City government will create a centralized recycling facility for medical waste in Barangay Felisa.

Mayor Alfredo Benitez confirmed that it was not just in Handumanan cemetery where the City Health Office (CHO) disposed of its medical waste, but also at the North Public Cemetery in Burgos.

Benitez said he was told that it was already the practice of the CHO for several years to dispose of the medical waste in the two cemeteries.

The city has no medical waste disposal facility.

He advised the CHO to throw away their medical waste properly.

He was informed that some hospitals in the city brought their medical waste to Cebu and Iloilo.

Meanwhile, Benitez said the city will upgrade the Handumanan public cemetery.

“We will come up with a design to beautify it just like a park,” Benitez said.

He added the city will make a policy to standardize the rates.

Benitez conducted a spot inspection in Handumanan cemetery on Saturday night, March 18.

He is also scheduled to visit the two other public cemeteries in Burgos and in Barangay Granada./MS, WDJ
