If the Philippine Constitution is ever amended, Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson said yesterday he wants elected officials to only have four-year terms.
Lacson said the current three-year term is too short, while a four-year term will give government officials two solid terms of delivery.
However, Lacson said cost and expenses will be the issue for the proposed constitutional change.
He said the proper timing to amend the constitution would be now because there will not be enough time after the elected officials’ third year in term.
“It’s best to discuss it and agree whether to proceed with the amendment or not,” Lacson said.
Earlier this week, the House committee on constitutional amendments, chaired by Cagayan de Oro City Congressman Rufus Rodriguez, adopted the proposal for a constitutional convention to amend the 1987 Constitution.
However, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr. said charter change is not in his priorities./DGB, WDJ
