Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson assured Negrenses that there is enough supply of eggs in the province.

Lacson said the price was already expected to rise due to the domino effect brought by inflation, and the price hike of other primary commodities as well as fuel.

In the province, the retail price for medium-sized eggs now runs at P9, much higher compared to last month’s P6.90.

Meanwhile, Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO) officer-in-charge Dr. Placeda Lemana also agreed with the governor’s statements, and said that feeds, feed supplements and labor costs have also increased.

PVO data showed that the province consumes 900,000 to one million eggs a day, compared to the daily production of 1.2 million eggs.

Layer farms in Negros Occidental also supply eggs to other provinces, and also bring in eggs from Cebu province’s Bantayan Island, Lemana said.

Last December, Negros Occidental prohibited the entry of poultry products from the neighboring provinces of Iloilo, Capiz, Antique, and Aklan on Panay Island and Guimaras, which have confirmed cases of the highly pathogenic avian influenza or bird flu./With reports from PNA / DGB, WDJ
