Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings made their way to the 2022 PBA Commissioner’s Cup finals after a 99-84 rout of Magnolia Chicken Timplados Hotshots in Game 4 of the semifinals yesterday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Justin Brownlee led the way with 24 points, 16 rebounds and six assists, while Japeth Aguilar added 19 markers as the Gin Kings wrapped up the best-of-five semifinals series at 3-1.
LA Tenorio drilled four triples on his way to 18 points, while Earl Scottie Thompson and Jamie Malonzo had 14 and 10 points for Ginebra, which survived the first quarter ejection of Christian Standhardinger.
Standhardinger was sent off just six minutes into Game 4 after being slapped with a flagrant foul penalty for throwing the ball at Magnolia import Nicholas Rakocevic.
But the ejection was not felt by the Gin Kings as they had a blistering first quarter for a 39-28 lead before widening it to 53-41 at the half behind the hot shooting of Tenorio and Brownlee.
Ginebra had a strong start in the third quarter behind Thompson, Brownlee and Tenorio, as the lead reached its largest at 73-49, but Magnolia managed to cut it to 68-82.
The Hotshots made their last push in the fourth frame as they chopped the deficit to 74-87, but the Gin Kings restored order at 98-78 with inside connections from Aguilar.
Calvin Abueva top-scored for the Hotshots with 14 points, Rakocevic ended with double-double 13 points and 13 rebounds, while Jiovani Jalalon had 12 markers.
