The number of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) cases in Negros Occidental is alarming, according to the Provincial Health Office (PHO).

PHO head Dr. Ernell Tumimbang said from January to September of this year, the province recorded 172 confirmed HIV cases, while its capital, Bacolod City, reported 101 cases.

Tumimbang said 50 percent of the cases in the province are from 25 to 34 years old, while the youngest case involved a 15-year-old.

The PHO head also noted that of the 172 cases, 115 were attributed to male-to-male transmission.

They said those who are considered vulnerable to getting the infection should be tested immediately.

Tumimbang also advised the public to avoid risky sexual behavior, practice safe sex, and seek immediate medical treatment if tested positive for HIV which, if left untreated, could lead to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.

With proper medical care, HIV can be controlled, the US Centers for Disease Control said.

People with HIV who get effective treatment can live long, healthy lives and protect their partners, it added.

In Western Visayas, Iloilo province has the highest number of HIV cases with 210, followed by Capiz with 106, Iloilo City with 92, Aklan with 71, Antique with 48, and Guimaras with 14, data showed./DGB, WDJ
