Iloilo, Negros bested foes in PCAP

The Iloilo Kisela Knights and Negros Kingsmen swept their two matches in the 2022 Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) Third Conference on Saturday night, November 19.

The Kisela Knights stayed in second place of the Southern Division standings with a 28-4 win-loss slate following an 18-3 victory over Tacloban and a close 12.5-8.5 win over Palawan.

The Kisela Knights barely defeated Tacloban in the blitz, 4-3, with Giovanni Mejia (Board 1), Karl Victor Ochoa (Board 2) and Rolly Parondo, Jr. (Board 5) getting the full points and Cesar Mariano (Board 4) and Fritz Porras (Board 6) for a split.

The Kisela Knights had a 14-0 shutout win over Tacloban in the rapid game with Mejia, Ochoa, Fiona Geeweneth Guirhem (Board 3), Mariano, Parondo, Porras, and Mark Mariano (Board 7) getting the full two points.

Iloilo scored a 4.5-2.5 victory over Palawan in a blitz game with full points by Parondo (Board 1), Ochoa (Board 2), Cherry Ann Mejia (Board 3), and Cesar Mariano (Board 4) and split by Porras (Board 5).

The Kisela Knights barely escaped Tacloban in the rapid event, 8-6, with only Parondo, Ochoa, Mariano, and Porras getting the full two points.

On the other hand, the Kingsmen stayed in third place in the Southern Division standings with its 25-5 record following a 16-5 beating of Camarines-Iriga and a 16-5 win over Tacloban.

Negros turned back Camarines-Iriga in the blitz event, 7-0, with David Elorta (Board 1), Joel Pimentel (Board 2), Bernadette Galas (Board 3), Edmundo Gatus (Board 4), Alfredo Dumalag (Board 5), Rolzon Roullo (Board 6), and Ted Montoyo (Board 7) getting the full two points.

The Kingsmen also edged Camarines-Iriga in the rapid game, 9-5, with Elorta, Pimentel, Galas, and Gatus getting the full two points each and Roullo settling for a split with his opponent.

The Kingsmen cruised to a 5-2 victory over Tacloban in the blitz game with Elorta, Galas, Gatus, Roullo, and Montoyo finishing with a full point each. Elorta, Gatus, Alvin Alcala, Roullo, and Montoyo carried out the fight for Negrenses in the rapid game./ASC, WDJ
