A water sample taken from a well in Bacolod City’s Barangay Mandalagan tested positive for vibrio cholerae, a cholera-causing bacteria, based on findings by the City Health Office (CHO) yesterday morning.
The well, located at Purok Luhod-luhod, was reported to also be actively used by residents living in the area.
The CHO promptly closed the well for the protection of the local residents.
Bacolod City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (DRRMO) head, Dr. Anna Maria Laarni Pornan said the inspection was part of the orders of the city government.
All water wells must be sampled and disinfected.
Pornan advised the public to properly cover the containers to prevent water contamination.
Authorities also advised to boil water for five minutes prior to consumption.
They further added that proper hygiene must also be observed, such as regular hand washing and seeking immediate medical attention should they experience fever and low bowel movement.
As of November 5, the CHO reported 15 confirmed cholera cases and another 239 cases of acute gastroenteritis./DGB, WDJ
