Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson believes the decision made by President-elect Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. to lead the Department of Agriculture (DA) himself is a signal that the president is giving importance to the country’s agriculture sector.
“It’s already the president who leads the action that would be faster because right there and then he can make a decision which becomes executory right away. So I think he just wants to tell us that he is giving agriculture a priority, being an agricultural country,” Lacson explained.
Marcos announced on Monday, June 20, that he will be leading the DA beginning July 1.
He said the decision is temporary, pointing out the urgency of addressing the rising food prices.
As the head of the DA, Marcos would also be reviewing or restructuring the National Food Authority and the Food Terminal Incorporated, pointing out their functions had changed over the years and it is time for them to return to their original functions./DGB, WDJ
