The Provincial Incident Management Team (PIMT) of Negros Occidental released a report yesterday stating that the number of active coronavirus disease 2019, or COVID-19, cases in the province is now at an all-time high.
Based on the data released by the PIMT, as of April 14, the number of active cases has reached 1,849 after 142 additional cases were recorded on the same date.
Data also showed that the number of active cases in Negros Occidental has surpassed the previous record-high 1,683 recorded in September of last year.
The PIMT also noted several local government units (LGU) in Negros Occidental which currently have triple digit active COVID-19 cases such as San Carlos City with 328; Kabankalan City – 149; Cauayan – 135; Himamaylan City – 131; Cadiz City – 126; Murcia – 111; and Bago City – 110.
Areas currently with the lowest number of active cases include the towns of Manapla and Hinigaran, and Sipalay City with only 10 actives cases each; Moises Padilla and Hinoba-an with three actives cases each; and the town of Candoni with only one recorded active case.
The town of Don Salvador Benedicto remains the only LGU in Negros Occidental to be COVID-free.
Meanwhile, Western Visayas logged 486 new COVID-19 cases yesterday, of which 290 are from Negros Occidental, based on the Department of Health 6’s (DOH-6) COVID-19 Regional Case Bulletin No. 384. This is the highest recorded daily tally in the region since the pandemic began over a year ago. DOH-6’s also showed that as of yesterday, Negros Occidental’s active COVID-19 case rose to 1,933.
Earlier, Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson said the province will implement more measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 cases after its request for the province to be placed under general community quarantine was rejected by the National Inter-Agency Task Force.
Tourist destinations in areas with a high number of active COVID-19 cases will be temporarily closed, Lacson said.
Those with low cases, meanwhile, will be allowed to operate at only 50 percent capacity.
Cockpits in the province will also remain closed until further notice, while only limited attendees will be allowed for events such as weddings, baptisms and funerals./DGB, WDJ
