Former UST basketball coach dead at 80

Former University of Santo Tomas (UST) basketball coach Aric del Rosario, who steered the team to four consecutive UAAP championships in the 1990s, died yesterday afternoon from a cardiac arrest. He was 80 years old.
He led UST to the championship from 1993 to 1996 with now-retired PBA player Dennis Espino and Chris Cantonjos on the 1993 squad that scored a 14-game sweep that season.
Prior to coaching, he played for UST in the 1960s.
Meanwhile, he also served as long time deputy for then-Alaska Aces head coach Tim Cone
Del Rosario also mentored the Pampanga Dragons to the championship in the now-defunct Metropolitan Basketball Association; won gold as coach of Team Philippines in the 2003 Southeast Asian Games; led University of Perpetual Help System DALTA-Atlas to the NCAA final four; and, most recently, coached the Parañaque Patriots int he Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League./ASC, WDJ
