The Negros Occidental Provincial Board yesterday passed a resolution urging the Department of Education (DepEd) to end the school year early amid the ongoing threat from the coronavirus disease, or Covid-19.
The legislation, which was authored by Provincial Board Members Agustin Bascon and Araceli Somosa, called it “quite evident” that schools have the potential of serving as “an ideal breeding ground for all sorts of biological strains.”
They also noted, by closing schools, the move will “combat the spread to teachers, school personnel, and other adults, including but not limited to parents, grandparents, and relatives who may be at a greater risk for contracting more serious infections.”
The resolution also noted, closing the school year early will not be detrimental and impactful as it is about to end in less than a month.
Meanwhile, Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson said the prevention of Covid-19 is now the main priority.
“The province already asked suppliers of personal protective kits and thermal scanners for their delivery, which will be used at the ports and airport, and medical personnel,” he said.
The governor said he met yesterday with various provincial government officials after President Rodrigo Duterte declared the country under a state of public health emergency following an increase of Covid-19 patients in the country./DGB, WDJ
