Department of Tourism-Region VI (DOT-6) director, Atty. Helen J. Catalbas, recently presented Iloilo City Mayor Jerry P. Treñas the ASEAN Clean Tourist City plaque, which recognized the city as one of the “cleanest urban centers and top destinations in Southeast Asia.”
The award is provided to cities that have beautified public areas, improved the local environment and sanitation standards, enhanced urban spaces, and promoted man-made and natural attractions.
During last month’s Dinagyang Festival, the city placed a focus on cleanliness and installed 62 portable toilets, along with trash bins, across the city.
“As your local chief executive, together with the Iloilo Festivals Foundation Inc., we will do our best to give you the kind of fun festival you deserve but I hope that you also help us in keeping our city clean, especially during the Dinagyang events,” the mayor previously said.
In addition, “green guards,” were on duty watching over streets, parks, and plazas. These individuals served as sanitation officers and were authorized to apprehend offenders and issue citations.
